Razer's Pro Type Ergo: A Comfortable Productivity Keyboard with a Twist
Razer's latest offering, the Pro Type Ergo, is an ergonomic keyboard designed for productivity with a unique twist. It's a bold move for the company, blending their gaming DNA with a productivity-focused design. The result is a keyboard that's both comfortable and functional, but it might not be the first choice for serious gamers.
The Pro Type Ergo is a large keyboard, and its size is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it provides ample space for your hands and fingers, which is great for long typing sessions. On the other, it's a significant departure from my usual go-to keyboard, the Logitech Keys Mini. But, surprisingly, I didn't mind the change.
One of the standout features is the split layout, which is different from other split keyboards I've used. The 7, T, G, and H keys are larger, and there are two B keys, which helps prevent mis-touches. The space bar is also split, with a backspace bar between the two, which took some getting used to. I found myself using my right hand more often, as my left index finger had to stretch to hit the Y key.
The keys themselves use ultra-low-profile scissor switches, which offer a precise touch and are perfect for productivity. The fingertip-shaped, curved keycaps further enhance the typing experience, making it easy to find the center of the keys. I appreciate the comfort and guidance these keys provide, a stark contrast to the flat keys on many laptops.
Ergonomics are a key focus, with four adjustable feet that can be set to flat, 4 degrees, or 7 degrees. This allows you to find the perfect height for your typing comfort. The built-in wrist rest is a welcome addition, providing further support for your hands and wrists.
The Pro Type Ergo also features 19 RGB lighting zones, adding a touch of gaming flair to the keyboard. However, keep in mind that the battery life will be shorter if you use the RGB lighting. I prefer a single color for future use, as the RGB lighting can be a bit too much for my taste.
In terms of connectivity, the keyboard offers USB-C and 2.4 GHz wireless via a dongle, as well as the ability to connect up to three Bluetooth devices. This versatility is a plus, especially for those who want to streamline their setup.
The AI Prompt button is a curious feature, as it only opens a window to create AI queries using ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot. I found it underutilized, but the rest of the remappable buttons are excellent, allowing for customization on a per-app basis.
Overall, the Pro Type Ergo is a well-designed keyboard that strikes a balance between gaming flair and productivity. It's comfortable, functional, and offers a unique layout that might take some time to adjust to. The adjustable feet and wrist rest make it a great choice for those who want to take care of their hands and wrists during long typing sessions.
While it might not be the gaming keyboard of choice, the Pro Type Ergo is a solid addition to Razer's lineup, offering a fun and comfortable typing experience for all your work needs.
